Are you checking out the Ford Super Duty and the GMC Sierra HD? Both collections of heavy-duty trucks deliver solid towing capabilities and a wealth of optional features. Read our comparison guide to get a better grasp on these heavy-duty pickup trucks.
Raw Power: Ford Super Duty
Besides supplying more power, the Ford Super Duty also offers an extra engine option, thereby catering to a wider range of drivers. The bigger, 7.3-liter gas-powered engine, will help you increase hauling potential. The turbodiesel engine is the right choice for maximum towing.
- 6.2-liter gasoline V8 (385 horsepower, 430 pound-feet of torque)
- 7.3L gasoline V8 (430 hp, 475 lb-ft)
- 6.7L turbocharged diesel V8 (475 hp, 1,050 lb-ft)
The GMC Sierra HD does have a stronger standard engine than the Super Duty, but its turbo diesel engine falls behind. Since the diesel option is what helps you tow max loads, the Super Duty really has the edge in terms of pure power.
- 6.6L gasoline V8 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft)
- 6.6L diesel V8 (445 hp, 910 lb-ft)
Towing Capabilities: Ford Super Duty
Depending on which Super Duty truck you select, you have the potential to tow and haul more than the Sierra HD can manage. Of all the F-Series trucks, the F-350 hauls the biggest payloads, moving up to 7,850 pounds. And the F-450 can tow more than other Super Duty trucks, transporting up to 37,000 pounds’ worth of gooseneck trailers.
F-250:
- 20,000 lbs conventional towing
- 22,800 lbs gooseneck/fifth-wheel towing
- 4,260 lbs max payloads
F-350:
- 21,200 lbs conventional towing
- 35,700 lbs gooseneck towing
- 7,850 lbs max payloads
F-450
- 24,200 lbs conventional towing
- 37,000 lbs gooseneck towing
- 6,210 lbs max payloads
There are only two Sierra HD models, the 2500HD and 3500HD. However, the 3500HD can almost compete with the F-450, with max tow ratings of 36,000 pounds. Payloads fall short of Super Duty competitors by over 1,000 pounds, however.
Sierra 2500HD
- 18,500 lbs max towing
- 3,862 lbs max payloads
Sierra 3500HD
- 20,000 lbs conventional towing
- 36,000 lbs gooseneck towing
- 6,374 lbs max payloads
Interior Comfort & Support: It’s a Tie!
We like both trucks’ cushy cabins. Both heavy-duty pickups are available with a regular, extended, or crew cabin. And each one delivers generous passenger space. Each of these heavy-duty trucks also offers a wide range of upscale features, including optional leather upholstery, heated seats, and dual-zone climate control.
Tech Features: Ford Super Duty
With its cutting-edge infotainment system, the Super Duty takes the lead here. Thanks to its new Sync 4 system, the Super Duty includes wireless connectivity for its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features. On the mid-grade Lariat trim model and up, you’ll find a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen to maximize usability.
The GMC Sierra HD hasn’t upgraded its infotainment system lately, and it shows. These trucks feature the old, wired versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And the optional touchscreen is only 8 inches.
